Inactive Patterns

  • Diversity - Homogeneous systems are brittle and prone to failure
  • Closed Loop - With the exception of sunlight and cosmic dust, the Earth is a closed system with a fixed amount of resources

Ideas for Patterns

Maibritt Pedersen Zari has created a Draft Principles of Ecosystems. The first page lists her attempt at consolidating principles from a range of sources, referenced on the second page and listed on subsequent pages. The plan is to develop an initial set of patterns from these principles, expand upon these patterns as they come up during discussion, and identify any emergent 'grammar' that will help us organize the patterns in a Pattern Language. (Note: please do not redistribute Maibritt's document without the author's express permission.)

New.gifMaibritt's paper An ecosystem based biomimetic theory for a regenerative built environment (Pedersen Zari, M., & Storey, J. B., 2007, presented at the Lisbon Sustainable Building Conference 07, Lisbon, Portugal) applies ecosystem principles to develop a design theory for the built environment. In addition to numerous references, it includes specific examples of how the principles can be applied. New.gif See EBBT: Overview for a Concept Map based on the paper.

Creating a New Pattern

Fill in a short name for the new pattern in the box below, then click on the 'Create Article' button.

Please remember to create a link to the new pattern in the list above:

  • return to this page and edit it
  • create a bulleted entry using an '*'
  • use the 'Internal link' button (third from the left)
  • replace 'Link title' with the exact name of your new Pattern page
  • add additional text after the link (<should we show the problem statement?>)
