Problems Uploading/Displaying Images

--Norbert 17:49, 16 April 2008 (EDT) I had problems displaying new thumbnails of images today, apparently due to some system software changes on my web server. I think I solved the problem, at least for the moment.

--Norbert 14:10, 9 January 2008 (EST) I installed and tested ImageMagick today - it seems to create thumbnails of larger images that had caused failures before.

--Norbert 12:56, 1 November 2007 (EDT) I recently uploaded color scans of a book, and noticed that although the upload was successful, the confirmation page was blank. When I referenced the images with a [[Image:filename]] tag, the entire image displayed. However, when I then added thumbnail specifications (the images were quite large) such as [[Image:filename|left|115px]], I could not preview or save the page. I would either get a blank page or a Fatal Out of Memory error.

The problem appears to be in the routine that creates the thumbnails. Before it can shrink the image, it first has to expand the image. The individual JPG file may be quite small (I saw errors with files as small as 1MB), the uncompressed image may exceed the limitations imposed by the shared hosting service that I use.

Bypasses include saving the image as a file, not using the thumbnail feature, or resizing the image using a photo editing application or (for Windows users), the Image Resizing tool available from Microsoft PowerTools. If I get a chance, I will try to figure out the maximum image width/height. Longer term, I will try to install a more efficient image package that the Wiki supports.
